***Put back on Landing Page when life becomes normal again***
4th Quarter reading is due: We are reading: TWO GENRES/TWO CHALLENGES/AND....a MEMOIR/BIOGRAPHY/AUTO-BIOGRAPHY. Remember, MEMOIR/BIOGRAPHY/AUTO-BIOGRAPHY, can't count as a genre, UNLESS it is in graphic novel or diary form. Only ONE Book Talk will be accepted THE LAST WEEK and it must be properly book talked. Read regularly, work hard, and don't wait! If you wait, you might not get face time with Ms. Hinueber to properly BOOK TALK! Please make sure Book Talks are signed by parents, if your book also happens to be a movie to indicate that you actually read the book and didn't just watch the film. If you take shortcuts, you won't grow as a reader. We want to build your confidence so you're ready for the responsibilities of 8th grade and high school! ALL BOOKS MUST BE at your reading level. ALL GRAPHIC NOVELS COUNT AS HALF PAGES! |
Independent Reading in 7th Grade |
Independent Reading, or IR, is slightly different in seventh grade. Instead of a book per month, students have a PAGE GOAL per quarter, meaning over the course of the year, they will have set, and achieved, four different Independent Reading Goals.
We use our calculation sheet to determine a ballpark figure for our 1st Quarter goal; page goals are individualized and unique to each student.
The idea behind Independent Reading in seventh-grade is to make reading a healthy habit for each child. A page goal should push a student to read consistently, but not be so large that it is overwhelming or detrimental to building a confident, life-long reader.
So...How Does it Work?
After we set our page goals, the idea is to read TWO HOURS a week in order for you to meet your page goal. That sounds intimidating, but there are many different ways you can tackle your pages. And it means if I don't assign HW, which I usually don't, you still have homework as you should be reading: TWO hours per week
Putting in the time will get you to your page goal; it will also help you grow as a reader.
Make sure you are filling out your Independent Reading Log and completing Book Talks after every book.
If you do not complete Book Talks, you will not get credit for your pages.
If you do not get credit for your pages, you will not meet your goal and your grade will suffer! I know you can do it!

How do I keep track of my reading goal in Power Schools?
PLEASE REMEMBER:
- If your book also happens to be a movie, I need your parents to sign the Book Talk verifying that you read the book and not just watched the movie.
- Audio books are okay. It's REALLY helpful if you can follow along with the book.
- Reading on an app is also okay as long as the technology is not abused.
- Try not to re-read. I have A LOT of fantastic suggestions and so do your friends!
- You have two weeks to live with your goal. After that, no changes can be made.
- Graphic novels count as 1/2 pages. Diary of a Wimpy Kids are ALWAYS 1/2 pages. See me with questions.
*** ONLY ONE BOOK TALK WILL BE ACCEPTED THE LAST WEEK! !!!! IF YOU WAIT UNTIL THE VERY LAST DAY, YOU MIGHT NOT GET FACE TIME WITH ME AND YOUR BOOK TALK WON'T BE ACCEPTED.

.Tips From Ms. Hinueber:
1. Divide books into weekly reading goals by placing sticky notes on the page you need to reach by the end of the week. Consistently read for two hours each week.
2. Select a specific and consistent time for reading. For example, plan to read every night before bed, on the way to lacrosse practice, immediately after school, etc.
3. Set a timer on your phone or other device!
4. Use an audio book while reading along with the book (otherwise it's tricky to find quotes for Book Talks!)
5. Read with sticky notes nearby....Flag pages or passages that will help you with your Book Talk!
6. Complete the Book Talk form THE SECOND YOU FINISH THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7. Chart your progress on your Independent Reading Log!!!
Make sure you are hitting your PAGES PER WEEK!
8. Take the time to find a book you like and are excited to read. It is SO much more enjoyable to tackle your IR goal with books you are actually excited about. You have a lot of freedom with this assignment, so take advantage!!
9. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! I've seen students get really stressed out; long-term goals can be tricky, but they are a part of life. I'll help you navigate this assignment, but you have to meet me half way and work hard
